Love and Math tells two intertwined stories: of the wonders of mathematics and of one young man's journey learning and living it. In this heartfelt and passionate book, Frenkel shows that mathematics, far from occupying a specialist niche, goes to the heart of all matter, uniting us across cultures, time, and space. A New York Times Science BestsellerWhat if you had to take an art class in which you were only taught how to paint a fence? What if you were never shown the paintings of van Gogh and Picasso, weren't even told they existed? Alas, this is how math is taught, and so for most of us it becomes the intellectual equivalent of watching paint dry.In Love and Math, renowned mathematician Edward Frenkel reveals a side of math we've never seen, suffused with all the beauty and elegance of a work of art. In the second vigil, Anselmus takes a boat trip on the Elbe with his friend Konrector Paulmann and his daughter Veronika, as well as the registrar Heerbrand. Anselmus then hugs the elder tree and tells the snakes to come back. As dusk falls, the snakes disappear just as suddenly as they appeared. They speak to him in seductive voices and Anselmus falls in love with one of them, the blue-eyed Serpentina. His thoughts revolve around the unfortunate incident with the market woman and he comes to the conclusion that his real life in general seems to be one of adversity and misfortune. Although he willingly compensates the old woman for the damage caused, she curses him and announces that he will soon fall into a crystal.Ī little later Anselmus is sitting under an elder tree by the Elbe. An old woman is selling apples there and the protagonist Anselmus accidentally stumbles across her wares. The action begins in front of the Black Gate in Dresden. In this work the 12 vigils count as chapters. These are parts of the Liturgy of the Hours that are performed either at night or in the early hours of the morning. The fairy tale is divided into 12 so-called vigils. In the present, the hero only comes close to the understanding of what those are. He had a great love in the past with Anny – an actress, obsessed with creation of “perfect moments”. Living on a rent and doing historical studies, the main character is spared the necessity to work and, as a result, to be connected to the society.Īntoine Roquentin lives alone. In it, the hero carefully and in detail describes his revelation of the notion of existence of the surrounding world and himself as part of it. In its shape, “Nausea” is a diary of the thirty years old historian Antoine Roquentin. In it, author performs the analysis of classical problems of existentialism as literary school: apprehension of the notion of existence and, as the result of this apprehension, theses of the absurdity of human life, its senselessness and life being a burden for the intellectual mind. Genre of the work is philosophical novel. “Nausea” was written by Jean-Paul Sartre in 1938 during author`s stay in Gavres. A major problem for the Church was to find a way to deal with its many adherents who just went along when faced with the possibility of execution. Here the new Christianity and the old Paganism collided. Hence, participation became a proof of loyalty that was, at times, insisted on. Pagan festivals were seen by the rulers as a way of maintaining the fabric of law and order. Fox is a classicist and historian whose last book was the successful Alexander the Great (1980). It is soon placed side by side with the story of the emerging Christian movement, and the growing pains of the latter take center stage increasingly as the book moves to its conclusion around the conversion of the Emperor Constantine in A.D. This begins as a description of pagan cult, festival and oracle in the civic order of the Roman world. Bryson, on the state of science books used within his school Contents īryson describes graphically and in layperson's terms the size of the universe and that of atoms and subatomic particles. "It was as if wanted to keep the good stuff secret by making all of it soberly unfathomable." Textbooks and teachers alike did not ignite the passion for knowledge in him, mainly because they never delved into the whys, hows, and whens. He writes that science was a distant, unexplained subject at school. In it, he explores time from the Big Bang to the discovery of quantum mechanics, via evolution and geology.īill Bryson wrote this book because he was dissatisfied with his scientific knowledge-that was, not much at all. Ī Short History deviates from Bryson's popular travel book genre, instead describing general sciences such as chemistry, paleontology, astronomy, and particle physics. It was one of the bestselling popular science books of 2005 in the United Kingdom, selling over 300,000 copies. A Short History of Nearly Everything by American-British author Bill Bryson is a popular science book that explains some areas of science, using easily accessible language that appeals more to the general public than many other books dedicated to the subject. In one way, reading the Prologue will give you a good preview of the intensity of the book’s content. I’m not sure if it would be better to begin with Chapter One and skip the Prologue or not. So while I was reading, I was anxiously anticipating this event. It is a spoiler for one of the main tragic events in the story. Prologue: I have mixed feelings about the Prologue. It’s more about their enduring love, faith in each other, survival, and hope for a bright future. Romance plays a part in the narrative but it is not the main focus of the story. Where the Lost Wander consists of a significant amount of trauma, challenge, endurance, survival, and hardship. Romance connotes a lighter and happily-ever-after story in which romance is the main focus. Genre: Where the Lost Wander is shelved as a western romance however, I might tweak that and categorize it as a love story. Don’t miss the author’s notes detailing her own family history and the real characters upon which this story is based. but it is also incredibly sad and difficult to read in places. A page-turner, Where the Lost Wander is filled with historical details and establishes a strong sense of place…. Writing: If you’ve read From Sand and Ash (a favorite read) or What the Wind Knows, by Amy Harmon, you know that Harmon’s stories are beautifully written. |
